A light-emitting diode (LED) is known as a monochrome light source. From the theory, there is no white light directly emitted from the radiative recombination at the p-n junction. In order to generate white light, either tri-color mixing with RGB LEDs or phosphor-converted LED (pc-LED) needs to be implemented. Among various color tuning methods, blue LED with yellow phosphor deposition is the mainstream for white light illumination in solid state lighting. In general, there are three configurations for the arrangement of yellow phosphor powder, namely, dispersed, conformal, and remote phosphor. This presentation will focus on conformal and remote phosphor and compare various kinds of phosphor deposition methods. The pro-n-cons of each deposition method will be discussed in detail. In particular, some newly developed quasi-conformal and remote phosphor dispensing methods will be introduced. These methods use conventional phosphor dispensing equipment without any modifications but can save substantial amount of phosphor. In this presentation, the implementing procedure and processing parameters of several innovative phosphor dispensing methods will be demonstrated and compared.
